About CapCityKids

The Capital City Fund for Education is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization created to help children facing homelessness beat the odds and get a quality education. CapCityKids was founded by the partners of Amherst Holdings, LLC, initially in response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Since then, CapCity Kids has developed innovative programs, providing direct resources and addressing the needs of homeless students in the Austin area. Administrative costs for our programs are absorbed by our Board (Dobson Foundation) and by leveraging existing infrastructure at Austin Independent School District. Thanks to this close partnership, 100% of your donations go directly to the students. In addition to transportation, school supplies, and other support services, CapCity Kids provides grants to AISD for pilot programs aimed at discovering and implementing effective practices and procedures to minimize these hurdles. From experience in working with the AISD and consulting with education experts working on the problems that homeless students face, CapCityKids has developed the following programs to support our students.

CapCity Kids Programs

  • On this day, homeless students and their families are invited to attend a fair-like event with participants from the local community who will be providing onsite information. In addition to learning about different resources, they will participate in fun activities such as a Photo Booth, have their faces painted, and receive a backpack filled with quality school supplies. Lunch will also be provided as well as snow cones for a fun treat.

  • CapCityKids funds a math specialist at Mathews Elementary to work with their homeless population and other at-risk students who are struggling academically. CapCityKids started working with Mathews Elementary during the 2006 – 2007 school year. Matthews has earned an Exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency due to substantial increases in math scores by these students.

  • CapCityKids funds a licensed clinical social worker who supervises graduate-level social work interns from the University of Texas at Austin. These interns provide social work services to homeless and at-risk students at school throughout Austin which include individual counseling and therapy, child and family advocacy services, and group therapy. This special pilot project has led to a strategic collaboration between CapCityKids, AISD, and the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin.

  • Each year, CapCityKids funds various school activity fees and other support services to provide students with the opportunity of a well-rounded education. Over 300 students are able to attend schools with the funding of CapMetro transportation on yearly basis. CapCityKids values the importance in providing these students with experiences in the fields of art, music and physical fitness. In conjunction with AISD, CapCityKids conducts special events throughout the year, providing students with nutritional education and other life skills assistance.
